Bank Security Footage: First Look

“Helen, would you call Shelly and ask her to come over and look at the security footage of the bank robbery?”

“Attempted bank robbery,” corrected Helen. “I’ve already called her. She’s on her way. Do you have the security camera footage?”

Zeb held up a disc.

“Are you going to look at it with her?” asked Helen.

“Yes. Why?”

“Her eye is much better than yours. No sense wasting your time. We’ve got a half-dozen crimes to follow up on.”

“Just the same, I want to see it.’

Helen handed Zeb some papers.

“Here’s Jake’s report on Swig.”

“Did you see anything that jumped out at you?”

Helen was a detail person. She always read reports before she handed them over to Zeb. Her insight was eminently reliable.

“They wore black gloves. It will be interesting to see if the tape of the Copper State Bank attempted robbery shows black gloves as well.”

“The color of the gloves is a point of conflict among the witnesses,” said Zeb.

“I read the reports,” said Helen.

“You’re thinking it was the same people that committed most or all of these crimes, aren’t you?” asked Zeb.

“I was, but it would be awfully daring of them to stay around town and keep committing crimes. The longer they stay, the more crimes they commit, that is, if it is the same pair of criminals in the Swig thing, the Copper State Bank thing, the nursing home scare and the tainting of the water supply, well, they are taking a big risk. If they’re professionals, as you think they are, it doesn’t seem to fit. Professionals don’t take risks like that.”

“You’re right. No one takes risks like that unless they have a damn good reason,” said Zeb.

“Swearing isn’t going to help you solve the crime,” said Helen. “Good old-fashioned detective work is going to be your best friend.”

“What’ve you got for me?”

Shelly Hamlin, a free-spirited computer expert, bopped through the door. Her hair was done up in a Samurai ponytail. As usual, she wore a grin on her face.

“Bank security camera footage? I saw the Marian Snow show last night. I’ve already got a few suspicions.”

“Such as?” asked Zeb.

“Let’s have a look at the footage. I can confirm or rule out my notions that way.”

Zeb handed Shelly the disc.

“The bank didn’t give you a flash drive?”

“I guess their technology isn’t as up to date as you are,” said Zeb.

“It’s a good thing I kept an old computer, or I wouldn’t have a way to read it.”

“I’ll talk to the bank and advise them to update their system,” replied Zeb.

Shelly turned to Zeb and smiled. She was well aware he wasn’t up to date on computers and how they worked. She made a mental note to help educate him when there was time.

She slipped the disc into her laptop and a few keystrokes later they were watching the four minutes of tape.

“Four minutes and six seconds is exactly how much time passed from the time they entered the bank until they left,” said Shelly. “These guys didn’t waste any time.
